The highest Pole Party in the UK Ben Nevis

Kay Penney owner of Pole Passion, seen here with her son Alan preparing to climb Ben Nevis this highest mountain in the UK.  Kay who is a cancer survivor decided to do the climb for two charities St Barnabus and St Luke's Hospice which were the places where her friends daughter aged just 21 had her final days and her mum ages 64 had her final days too

Carrying over 25 kilos and 9 hours later through wind, rain and treacherous, ankle breaking,
conditions they returned exhausted, yet proud

3 Wrist & Forearm Pole Strength and flexibility training Pole Passion

Pole Fitness and Dance
Many of us forget how important our wrists are for pole fitness and dance and quite often forgotten about it until it’s too late
In our experience, as a student progresses from the foundations and eager to go upside down, they underestimate the importance of strong forearms and wrists (to hold our bodies up on the poles and to come down again safely) – many students admit sometimes it’s been a good 10 or sometimes 15 years since they did a hand stand!!

So each week focus on the wrists and forearms from the beginning of your training
These simple exercises off the pole  can be included as part of the warm ups or as the main component of your lesson or at home as additional pole practice

Exercise 1
Use a  squeezy stress ball or a tennis ball
Squeeze tightly for a count of 5 seconds  (this should not cause pain or discomfort)
On each hand
Repeat ten times x 3 sets

Exercise 2
Wrist flexion and extension
Wrist flexion
Palm facing upwards, elbow into chest, supporting your forearm with your other hand
create a fist - gently raise and lower your fist keeping the arm at 90 degrees bend
Wrist extension
Palm facing downward, elbow into chest, supporting your forearm with your other hand
create a fist – gently raise and lower your fist keeping your arm at 90 degrees bend
10 moves x 3 sets Stop if it is uncomfortable and do not over train this movement 2 /3 times per week
To make this harder and advance this movement
Add a stretch band for resistance (held by your foot) or hold a light weight in the hand whilst performing this movement

Exercise 3
Circular wrist movements
Move your wrists, with your hands in a fist position, left and right
and in a circular motion in both directions
repeat for a count of 20 x 2 on each hand

Pole Kisses or Bruises?

Pole Kisses or Bruises?

Some polers are proud, some are ashamed  - which one are you?
Some interesting facts about bruises and why some pole people bruise and others don’t –
Friction between skin and pole can  cause red to blue to brown markings on the skin, bruising can be a  sign that you are deficient of certain vitamins such as B12, K, E, C and or minerals such as bioflavonoids found in citrus fruits and blackcurrants, or zinc, also.
It can also be a reason of certain medication you are taking either over the counter or prescription drugs for example,  Corticosteroid used to treat asthma or eczema which can thin the skin, causing more bruising than normal.
Once a bruise has appeared we recommend a certain few things that may help the bruise disappear to vanish.  Depending on the severity of a bruise it can take up to 4 to 5 days for a bruise to disappear.

Try and avoid ‘working’ the bruised area on the pole as it will only make it worse
Our most popular choice of treatment for a bruise  is arnica, found as a topic cream or as an ingestible as little homoeopathic pills
If your bruise has broken the skin then you may have a risk of further infection, so always look after your bruises well.
I once had a student that just couldn't get bruised because of her modelling career !! so bruising is not always welcome in your pole class

Could your dance and fitness pole be killing you? Are you Asbestos Aware?

RPole Sport Fitness - News

Asbestos:
The Hidden Killer
What is Asbestos?
Asbestos is a natural rock. When crushed it turns into small fibres that look like needles of glass under the microscope. It was used for many purposes until recently as is a very good insulator of heat and electricity, and was used to make roofing tiles, flooring tiles, and added to plaster in textured ceilings such as Artex for many years.
However, we now know that Asbestos is dangerous and the needle-like fibres when inhaled can cause breathing problems and serious illnesses. In the UK Asbestos is no longer used, but many millions of buildings and homes as recent as 1990 contain Asbestos. In homes this is usually found in Artex or textured ceilings which is relatively safe, unless disturbed where fibres are released into the air and breathed in.
How can it hurt me?
Asbestos is only dangerous if the fibres are breathed in and get into your lungs. People who get very ill with Asbestos get an illness called Asbestosis where the fibres get stuck in the lung and can cause a form of cancer, but you have to breathe in a lot to get this. The types and levels of Asbestos found in the home are almost always low risk, and as they are held inside the floor tile or ceiling texture they can’t get into the air unless the material is damaged then there is a risk of exposure.
Spot the odd one out…

It may seem an obvious choice perhaps but ‘Pole Fitness’ is the only one on the list equally at risk of exposure to asbestos materials yet the only one NOT to receive any formal guidance on the dangers of Asbestos.
Fact:
You can’t see or smell asbestos fibres in the air.  The effects of asbestos take many years to show up - avoid breathing it in now.  Smoking increases the risk many times.  Asbestos is only a danger when fibres are made airborne
But let’s bring the danger of Asbestos into perspective. Asbestos material in good condition is safe unless asbestos fibres become airborne, which happens when materials are damaged… like fitting a pole, or if the pole is loose on the ceiling.

This will only affect instructors and students who fit their own poles at home because commercial premises have a formal duty to manage asbestos under regulation 4 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006. This would cover studios in sports centres and Council owned venues where they have a responsibility for protecting others who work in such premises, or use them in other ways, from the risks to ill health that exposure to asbestos causes so you are very unlikely to be at risk in these premises, but its always best to ask when hiring.
Asbestos was used in textured ceilings as recent as 1990 in domestic homes and this is where you may be unknowingly creating a danger by fitting a dance pole for yourself or to teach others as you may be releasing Asbestos fibres into the air by disturbing the ceiling. So for more information visit the HSE web site at:http://www.hse.gov.uk/asbestos/index.htm and remember if you are unsure about whether certain materials contain asbestos, presume it does and treat it as such especially if your home was built 1990 or before.
Homes built after 1990 ‘should’ be safe – if in doubt get a qualified builder to check out your ceilings.
Here are some basic principles to remember if you are on Instructing or teaching off a floor to ceiling pole;
• If your ceiling contains Asbestos and it is painted and left untouched, it is perfectly safe and will only give rise to potential danger if the ceiling is damaged or disturbed.
• Removing Asbestos is more dangerous than leaving it in place and managing it ie: not disturbing it
If in doubt
• Consider teaching or taking lessons at your local health club where they have a duty of care to ensure your safety – Always check with them before putting poles up
• Use a free standing pole that doesn’t require ceiling or floor fixings, therefore not disturbing materials

Pole Passion Party up Ben Nevis

So the Pole Party up Ben Nevis is set
12th July 2014
My friend’s daughter Francesca Blount died at the young age of 21.
University student - Her life cut short so rapidly by the destruction of Cancer.
Starting innocently with just a lump in her leg....We have experienced that cancer can take a life, as many others will have. So we wish to give back the support and care this hospice has supplied in our hour of needs.

Our aim is to raise as much money as we can and to do this we need a challenge; climbing the highest mountain in the UK.
We felt we should celebrate in a fun and different way as well, so at the top, we will have a Pole-Fitness Party too!!!!

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity. So it’s the most efficient way to donate – saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

Kay is also collecting donations for St Lukes Hospice in Winsford, where her mum's final days were.

Rpole are proud sponsors!!
